Now I will tell you a story
that one such as you can understand:
A long time ago I made a pact
to be here until the death of the land.
I could see the flames as they swallowed
forests and fields, and cities.
Left with the children that I followed
until I lost them under the seas;
for the heat from the flames drove them back, back,
until there was nowhere to go
Heaven blazing above, smoky black,
and the cool white-tipped waves below.

I made a vow, tied my spirit to the Earth until the last human has either died or sailed away through the stars. I wonder which it will be?
